Analysing Public Sentiment Following a High-Profile Shooting Incident

The Client's Need

The researcher wanted to understand public sentiment surrounding a high-profile shooting incident involving a prominent public figure. The study aimed to examine how members of the public reacted to the incident and whether public opinion could create indirect social pressure that may influence judicial processes and public discourse.

Our Role

Intelligent Data worked with the researcher to develop a structured approach for collecting and analysing large volumes of public comments from online platforms. We assisted in identifying appropriate data sources and developing a methodology for converting unstructured social media comments into usable research data.

We supported the coding and categorisation of comments into meaningful themes and assisted with developing a sampling strategy to ensure that the analysis was systematic and reliable. We then analysed patterns within the data to identify dominant perceptions, sentiments, and recurring viewpoints expressed by the public.

Finally, we assisted with interpreting the findings and translating the results into evidence-based insights that explained public reactions and their potential implications for public opinion and judicial processes.

Variables Analysed

Public sentiment and perceptions
Positive and negative reactions
Themes emerging from public comments
Trust in institutions and justice processes
Perceptions of accountability and fairness
Social and political influences on public opinion
Patterns of agreement and disagreement among commentators

The Outcome

The analysis provided a clear picture of how the public responded to the incident. It identified dominant themes, common concerns, and areas of strong public agreement and disagreement. The findings also demonstrated how large volumes of online commentary can be transformed into meaningful and measurable insights.

How the Results Informed the Study

The findings helped the researcher understand the nature and drivers of public sentiment following a high-profile event. The results provided evidence on how social media discussions can shape public narratives and potentially create indirect pressure around judicial and accountability processes. The study also demonstrated the value of using digital data sources to understand complex social issues and public opinion.
